Statistics state that the average age of individuals entering into an Apprenticeship is 26-28 years of age. We have serveral candidates who are interested in Apprenticeships in various occupations.

What is Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship is a training program for a career in the skilled trades.

  • Majority of training is "hands on" under the direction of a certified journeyperson (where required)
  • Completion of an in-school theory component is also part of the training
  • All apprenticeship programs are administered by the Ministry of Training

Apprenticeship Legislation

Apprentice trades are regulated by either:

  • The Apprenticeship Certification Act (ACA) or
  • The Trades Qualification and Apprenticeship Act (TQAA)

Who can be an apprentice?

  • You must be 16 years of age or older to register
  • For most trades, a high school diploma is required
  • Grade 10 for most construction related trades
  • Grade 12 for other trades

Tax Credit

The Proposed Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit

  • Purpose is to encourage employers to hire and train apprentices in certain skilled trades.
  • Businesses with wages over $400,000 could receive a 25% refundable tax credit on wages and salaries paid to eligible apprentices during the first 36 months of the apprenticeship.
  • Businesses with wages under $400,000 could be eligible for a higher tax credit rate of 30%.
  • The maximum tax credit per apprentice would be $5,000 per year over the first 36 months of the apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship Innovation Fund

  • Provides $15M annually through 2005 to support the development of curriculum for new and existing apprenticeship programs and to develop exemption tests.
  • Flexible delivery of programs (e.g. Canadian Tire program)
  • PLA System and academic remediation system
  • Integrate apprenticeship into in-school programs and eliminate duplication.

Apprenticeship Enhancement Fund - New for 2005

  • Provides $50M over 5 years to colleges that deliver apprenticeship to acquire new equipment and up-date facilities
  • Support increase in entrants into apprenticeship
  • Update facilities to support increase in enrolment
  • IEnable colleges to modernize their training to keep pace with technologicial changes in the workplace.
